Service Policies and Procedures are written with the UN Rights, the Law, the Regulations and the Standards in mind. Service policies and procedures must be followed by all staff at all times to ensure the safety of children.

As listed above, services embed many practices that keep children safe, (e.g sun safety, visitors to the service), and they will have policies and procedures for each of these practices. Please spend some time looking through your service’s policies and procedures. These policies are procedures are many of the REASONABLE PRECAUTIONS, services take to ensure children are protected from harm and hazard.

Each service will also have a detailed policy specifically regarding supervision.

Here is a sample supervision policy: Policy-21-Supervision-of-Children-2.pdf (pineslearning.com.au)

Both the Law and the Standards refer to services providing ADEQUATE SUPERVSION.

Adequate supervision helps to protect children from hazards, risks and harm.

Adequate supervision means:

  • that an educator can respond immediately, particularly when a child is distressed or in a hazardous situation
  • knowing where children are at all times
  • ensuring staff arrangements allow activities and experiences to be actively monitored and supervised appropriate to the age and abilities of the child and the risks involved.
