A Responsible Person must be at least 18 years old and must have completed Child Protection training.

Before placing a person in day-to-day charge, the Approved Provider or a Nominated Supervisor must take reasonable steps to ensure that the person:

  • Has adequate knowledge and understanding of the provision of education and care to children
  • Has the ability to effectively supervise and manage an education and care service

These two points will be covered in more detail in the sections that follow.

The Approved Provider and Nominated Supervisor should consider the following when considering a person for the role of PIDTDC:

  • Qualifications
  • Experience
  • Confidence and abilities
  • Familiarity with service operational policies and procedures as well as the NQF
  • Ability to support and lead other educators and staff
  • Ability to remain calm and level headed in an emergency
  • Willingness to be responsible

A Responsible Person is a leader. If you are asked to be a Responsible Person be prepared to step up to lead the team when the Approved Provider and Nominated Supervisor are not on the premises. If you are happy to take on the role, you must give your written consent.

The Approved Provider, Nominated Supervisor and PIDTDC must remain fit and proper for the service to operate under their management. The Approved Provider and/or Nominated Supervisor will monitor each PIDTDC to ensure they remain suitable for the role. If the PIDTDC is involved with any breach of the NQF, they may be removed from their role as a Responsible Person.
